What is Sailfish OS? 5 Things to Know About Jolla’s Open Source OS

What is Sailfish OS? 5 Things to Know About Jolla’s Open Source OS

May 20, 2013 12:44 PM EDT by Lisa Eadicicco, Staff Writer

This year, we’re already expecting to see a slew of new smartphone operating systems from the likes of Samsung, Ubuntu and Mozilla, so what’s one more?. Finnish startup Jolla has announced that its Sailfish-based device will debut this year, joining the likes of Firefox OS, Ubuntu and Tizen that could rival Android in the open-platform smartphone space.
Jolla, which was founded by former Nokia employees, essentially builds on the premise of the MeeGo OS which has since evolved into Tizen. Jolla’s self-titled LTE-enabled smartphone will be the first device to use Sailfish as its operating system, and comes with a 4.5-inch display, a dual-core processor, 16GB of storage expandable via microSD, an 8-megapixel camera and a replaceable battery.
The phone will cost €399 ($512) and is set to ship during the fourth quarter of this year. But what exactly is a Sailfish phone? Here are five quick facts about Sailfish and what it’s like to use Jolla’s mobile OS.

1. Android-Compatible

In an effort to boost app availability on its platform, Jolla has made Sailfish compatible with Android applications. This means that those who purchase Jolla’s phone will be able to download and install apps from Google’s Play store, which boasts a selection of more than 800,000 applications. According to Jolla you’ll have to install these apps through a “third party solution,” which probably means you’ll have to sideload them. This should make it easy for Android developers to port their apps to Sailfish, although we’re still waiting to hear about Sailfish’s own app store.

A tour of the Jolla phone

A tour of the Jolla phone with software head Marc Dillon video
Say hello to the Jolla Phone. Pre-orders for the world's first Sailfish OS device started today and we've called into Helsinki to get the whole story from Jolla's co-founder and software head Marc Dillon. While we know there's a 4.5-inch "high definition" screen (resolution TBC), dual-core processor and 8-megapixel camera, we were kept at arms length during our meeting with an early prototype. So, unfortunately, our full hands-on treatment will have to wait until later today. For now, Marc takes us through the thinking behind the hardware -- and what the notion of the "other half" really means

The most notable design point is how the device is split into two halves, with a back cover (available in several different colors) that can contain its own hardware components and communicate information from those components. The main half of the device, meanwhile, contains the display and processor.
This is where Jolla reckons its core innovation lies, with the opportunity to augment initial hardware in the future, as well as to allow personalization and other features at the software level. We quizzed Marc over what this might mean, and asked if things like wireless charging, high-capacity batteries, game controls and even a high-powered flash peripheral might be possible -- to which Dillon replied that all those ideas were possible, and that the only limit was "your imagination." It'll likely depend more on the reception of the device, although be assured that the OS we had demonstrated today looked just as fluid and intuitive as last time.
The Android app client remains on-board, while Jolla has made a concerted effort to appeal to the fragmented app market in China -- we're told the Jolla phone will be compatible with "multiple streams." The device is still pegged to arrive before the end of 2013, in time for Chinese New Year. We'll have our own opinions and a hands-on video (with a color option, we're promised) at the launch party in just a few hours.

Step 2- Connect your Sony Xperia Z to a computer using mass storage mode.

Step 3- Copy and paste the ROM and Google Apps zips downloaded in step 1, into the root folder of the mass storage device. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the root, but putting it in the root helps finding it easier.

Step 4- Turn off your Sony Xperia Z and reboot into the bootloader. Do this by pressing and holding the Volume Up + Volume Down and Power buttons.

Step 5. Use volume rocker to navigate and power button to click. Perform a data wipe + cache wipe

Step 6. Navigate to flash ZIP from SD card and choose ZIP from SD card

Step 7. Select the CM10.1 and MIUI based Avatar JB’s zip downloaded in step 1 first. Select it using the power button and confirm installation.

Step 8. Now do the same things with the Google Apps zip file.

Step 9. When installation is done, go back to the main menu of CWM and perform a reboot.

UniFlash for Android Flashes, Manages, and Installs ROMs From Your Desktop

UniFlash is a Windows utility that lets you download, flash, back up, restore, and install new ROMs on your Android device, all from the comfort of your desktop.
UniFlash is designed for people who love to experiment and play with their Android device, but the UI is easy to use and simple enough that even someone looking to install a new ROM for the first time will feel comfortable using it. There are some prerequisites though: the app only supports devices that are rooted (check out our always up to date guide to rooting your Android phone) for instructions how), with unlocked bootloaders, USB-debugging enabled( to put your pre-ICS phone in USB debugging mode, just head to Settings > Applications > Development and check USB Debugging. In ICS, go to Settings > Developer, enable developer options, then enable USB debugging,) and a recovery tool like ClockworkMod's ROM Manager installed.

Key Lime pie 5.0 to be released by October

Android 5.0 key lime pie release and features

We all are waiting for the release of key lime pie 5.0 and want to see How it will look like on our smartphones,
So here is a rumor about upcoming android version key lime pie 5.0 to be released by this october.

This goes against the grain of previous reports suggesting that Android 5.0 wouldn’t land until summer next year, but given what we know about Google’s upcoming OS so far, a 2013 debut makes quite a bit of sense.
Android 5.0 will be compatible with devices with as little as 512MB of RAM, which by 2013 standards really is about as low as it gets with Smartphones.
A such, an October launch would be perfectly timed given the flood of new Android devices at all levels hitting the market throughout the course of this year so far, which could be included in the Key Lime Pie update rollout and help bring a welcome dose of Android OS unity.
It is likely to be launched with Google Nexus 5 this year,
Key Lime pie Features:
1. Better Profile Management

Think that you are going to sleep. You need to make your device silent, Of all data networks, Activate Flight mode, Turn off Bluetooth and GPS etc. It's really a bit of fuss. So the upcoming OS Key Lime Pie should have something to manage these profile performance in a simple way.

2. Better Battery Management

Low battery capacity is the main problem facing by all Smart Phone devices. Running Smart Phone devices in low battery is somewhat like carrying an old black and white mobile phone. No Use at all. As the OS getting developed, surely there will more functions to keep battery at good level. Low battery consumption at gaming and date network also expected.

3. Better Social Network Support

All know that android is little behind in case social network supporting while compared to Windows and Apple. As a successful user i can argue that Android's Social Network Supports are only in papers, Not in performance. For Facebook there are cool apps, but a sucking app most time. Then what about Twitter? Google Plus??? Google really need to cook something what expected by their users.

4. "Never Update" option for all apps

Do you think Google will try an option "Never Update" for their apps? It can't expect as it disturbs their app developers. It will be a good option if they put a "Never Update" option for installed apps, which can prevent from accidental updations.

5. Unified Messaging

Simply this could be like Facebook home which gives priority for User choice. For better understanding it means wrapping up of all Google services like Google Talk, SMS, Gmail Voice, Google Plus Messenger into a single function. Along with their new OS unified messaging function will give user a better experience.

Android is going for a repair on 2013 and Key Lime Pie is the better opportunity. It's going to get more smoother, smarter and user-friendly. Unify messaging option surely catch huge amounts of audience from blackberry and apple.

No official news of release date is confirmed by Google.

Baydin CEO Alex Moore agrees, saying mobile has been the number one request from customers, and the company is thrilled it finally had the resources to deliver.
Google, of course, has not been ignoring the email management problem. The company recently introduced new features to its Gmail app, which helps to automatically categorize incoming messages as “updates,” “promotions,” and “social,” and then moves those into designed sections of the inbox.

Boomerang features:
Scheduled messages can be configured with a tap to go out in 2 hours, 4 hours, tomorrow, 2 or 4 days, a week, or you can type in a date and time to be even more specific. In addition, the app can bring back messages to the inbox if there’s no response, allowing for further follow up.
Unlike Mailbox, which only works on mobile (iPhone and more recently iPad), Boomerang’s advantage is that it will work on both web and mobile, but for now, “mobile” means “Android.” The company says that support for iOS is planned for the future, however

Updated OS blocks most Android Threads, report says

Juniper researchers concluded that android version 4.2 jellybean' which is the latest' can protect us from premium rate SMS apps.

Over three quarters of Android threats are malicious apps that send SMS messages to premium rate numbers and could be mitigated by a protection feature present in Android 4.2, according to researchers from networking vendor Juniper Networks.

However, because manufacturers and carriers fail to update Android end user devices in a timely fashion, only 4 percent of devices currently run Android 4.2, even though this version was released more than six months ago.
From March 2012 to March 2013 the number of mobile threats grew by 614 percent to reach a total of 276,259 malicious samples, researchers from Juniper Networks' Mobile Threat Center (MTC) said in a reportreleased Wednesday. Of those malicious applications, 92 percent target the Android operating system, they said.

The majority of Android malware, 77 percent, are apps that earn money for their creators by either requiring users to send SMS messages to premium rate numbers or by surreptitiously sending such messages on their own. These threats usually masquerade as legitimate applications or come bundled in pirated apps.
The Juniper researchers estimate that every successful attack using such an app can bring an immediate profit of US$10 for the attacker on average.
Android 4.2 introduced a feature that detects attempts to send SMS messages to special rate numbers, also known as short codes, and prompts users for confirmation. Unfortunately, due to the Android market fragmentation, only 4 percent of Android devices are currently running Android 4.2.x.
This estimation is based on data collected from Google Play over a 14-day period ending on May 1, 2013, the Juniper researchers said. Based on the same data, the most common versions of Android found on devices are Android 2.3.3 to 2.3.7, also known as "Gingerbread," with a 36.4 percent coverage and Android 4.0.3 and 4.0.4, also known as "Ice Cream Sandwich," with 25.5 percent.
The lack of regular updates for Android devices contributes to the growth of Android malware, because the latest protections added by Google to the operating systems reach users too late or never, the researchers said.
The second most common type of Android threats are spyware applications that capture and transfer sensitive user data to attackers. These account for 19 percent of all malicious samples collected by Juniper's MTC.
Some information-stealing Android Trojan apps discovered during the past year and distributed through drive-by downloads or phishing emails could also pose a threat to enterprise environments, the Juniper researchers said. Data collected from enterprise mobile devices running Juniper's Junos Pulse endpoint collaboration and security software showed at least one infection on 3.1 percent of such devices.
